Rich Dashnaw received his Bachelor of Science Degree, concentration in Theory and Composition, from The Westchester Conservatory/Mercy College in 1986. He studied Composition with Ruth Schonthal and Classical Guitar with James Lorusso and Dennis Cinelli. He also participated in Master Classes with Jorge Morel, Alice Artzt, and Paul O’Dette. He received his Master of Arts in Composition from Hunter College in January, 1988. There he studied Composition with Myron Fink, Counterpoint with Robert Fertitta, and Arranging/Film Scoring with Arthur Harris.
Rich arranged strings and brass for the Mt. Vernon Community Choir under the direction of Brian Moore for their album “Higher”. He also scored Mozart’s Concertante in D Major for Two Violins and Piano (after K 448) for the Manhattanville Community Orchestra. He has written works for flute, piano, classical guitar, acoustic guitar, string quartet, voice, trios, and orchestra, as well as popular and jazz tunes. He has written more than 75 songs in the pop/rock/folk styles. His "Rhapsody for Clarinet" was performed in the Fall of 2019 by his sister, Master Sergeant Jennifer Dashnaw with the Westchester Symphonic Winds. He released "Leon and Cleon Boyd" about twins Leon and Cleon who passed away in Vermont from Covid in April, 2020. He also released "We Are Here" a song aboutadoptees finding connection with people through DNA, or just being connected to each other.
Rich has maintained an active performing career on both guitar and bass. He has played with show bands in the Catskills, jazz trios, big bands, blues bands, chamber groups, and for religious institutions since the age of 12. He played on Andy Craig’s “Beautiful You” cd released in 2008, and performs with Andy regularly. He is a recent new member of The Whiskey Crows based in Long Island,NY - doing multi-instrumentalist duties: guitar, banjo, melodica, accordion. He also plays guitar for an Elvis cover band, and upright bass in a jazz trio. He leads his own jazz trio on guitar, and subs with many groups. He has also organized chamber concerts. Rich has been the upright bassist for Westchester Symphonic Winds since 2015, with concerts at the Tarrytown Music Hall, many venues throughout NY, and July 4th concerts at Caramoor, in Katonah. Rich is excited to have the time to be playing and recording his own music, and getting it out there.
